Light?
Dear Friends,
The light that we wish to arise in darkness, the light to which we sometimes have greatest access when things are worst within us or around us, is not only physical light. So what is it?
We will talk about it in several ways during our meeting today. On the one hand, it is the light of evidence, of clarity, of moving from the darkness of incomprehension (and what do we really understand?) to the -- perhaps only relative -- light of realization. On the other hand, Light can be a quasi-energetic or subtle experience of cellular refreshment, a light and lightening of mind and heart and body that sometimes seems available as soon as we turn toward it. On the third hand (maybe, like Guan Yin, we have a thousand hands), the light is not outside at all, but rather for us to generate and offer, something we're delighted to give rather than something we need to get.
All these variants and more come together in the light of the eye, which both receives and generates. We want to find our way into the fundamental gesture of eye-contact: with humans, animals, plants, the mineral world, and with all beings and dimensions as well. It is enriched by this sense of the light that we will once again meditate today, as part of our orientation toward the solstice, Meister Eckhart's famous sentence:
The eye through which I see God
is the same eye through which God sees me;
my eye and God’s eye are one eye,
one seeing, one knowing, one love.
with love,
Michael
