You Are My Rock
Dear Friends,
In recent months, we have not often meditated themes from the New Testament. There is a spiritual psychology to be found there that is well worth our time and trouble. I have hesitated to delve into it because Christianity has been so twisted and politicized in America. Still, that is no obstacle if we just go to the heart of the matter.
Today we will focus on the nature of solidity or firmness in the human psyche and in human relationship. When someone says (as Barack once did of Michelle), "She is my rock," or "You are my rock," what exactly is meant? Not, surely, that the designated person is never in doubt or never has human foibles, angers or fears.
In Psalm 18:2, David cries out, "The LORD is my rock." In Matthew 16:18 it is Peter, the most hasty and wavering of disciples, rather than "the LORD," who is designated as the rock on which the church is to be founded. How could this be? We'll look at the connection between human frailty and human constancy. This will lead us into the exercise of attention, compassion, and the hidden treasure within freedom itself.
We will actively share the collective energy of our hour's work for the benefit of this planet in its frailty and potential.
with love,
Michael
